How The Cartridge Dust Collector Works

The dust-laden gases enter through the side intake of the dust collector’s hopper, under vacuum or pressure (except for bin vents, where the air comes in from the bottom).

The gases are then filtered through the cartridges and exit through the openings into the clean air plenum. The clean air can either be channeled outside or re-circulated depending on the application.

Fast, Simple and Safe Cartridge Replacement

Cartridge replacement is performed outside the dust collector and requires no tools. This eliminates the need to work within a confined space and allows the worker to access the cartridge without getting dirty. The cartridge comes with a rectangular top plate that simplifies manipulation and eliminates potential installation errors.

Continuous Operation

Unlike other types of dust collectors such as the shaker, the cartridge dust collector does not have to be stopped in order to remove and clean dust particles from its filters.

In terms of performance, one of the most important criteria during the initial design of a dust collection system is the proper selection of the filtering media.

There are several cartridge models providing adaptation flexibility based on the characteristics of the various types of aerosols. The filtration effectiveness of Airex cartridges can achieve a level equivalent to HEPA, classified as MERV 16. In fact, a single cartridge has a total filtering surface that can reach up to 315 sq. ft. The compact aspect of such a filtering medium makes it a highly prized solution when the available space is limited.

The HEPA air-purification cabinet is equipped with filtration technology for decontaminating the ambient air through three separate filtration stages that, when combined, puts out purified air of equivalent quality to an industrial filtration system.

When contaminated air enters the cabinet, large particles are first extracted by the pre-filter. The air is then directed to the HEPA filter, which intercepts the remaining fine particles. Finally, just before reaching the unit’s outlet, the activated carbon filter absorbs odours, smoke and other types of chemical pollutants in the air stream.

 Adding an extraction arm provides the ability to filter out contaminants at the source before they enter the environment. This configuration type is especially valued by dentists, whose work generates aerosols from body fluids.

For comparison, high-efficiency HEPA filter technology has an efficiency of 99.97% for 0.3 µm particles. The ULPA filter has a higher filtration capacity of up to 99.9995% for 0.12 µm particles. Although the performance of these types of filters is very respectable, sometimes these filtration levels are insufficient for some settings.

For example, consider some sensitive environments where the air quality has to be 100% pure: laboratory cleanrooms, hospital settings (operating room, nursery), long-term care centres, high-tech factories, to name just a few.

The Ionex Series is designed to decontaminate air at the nano-scale. Its leading-edge electronic air purification method positions it as one of the most modern, high-performing units in any category. In fact, the Ionex Series can purify 99.7% of 0.003 µm contaminants.

Electronic air purification process
  1. Contaminated air is drawn into the unit.
  1. Aerosols are negatively ionized using a corona discharge inside the enclosure. They are then attracted to a positively ionized collection surface. Therefore, microbes, bacteria and viruses are eliminated by a powerful 24,000-volt electric shock.
  1. The air then moves to a section equipped with activated carbon that effectively removes volatile organic compounds (VOCs), smoke and odours from the airflow.
  1. The air exiting the unit is completely purified and free of particles, microbes and toxic gas fumes.

Ultimate Solution For Safe Decontamination

A great many people working in industrial companies are exposed to various airborne contaminants. When leaving their stations, those workers must inevitably dust off before moving to a clean area. As such, they will undergo a decontamination process between every break and shift change; otherwise they would contaminate the rest areas, meal areas and change rooms.

The DASHX series air shower developed by Airex Industries provides workers with the ability to clean themselves independently, quickly and efficiently. Also, this booth is able to capture even the finest particulates during the dust-removal cycle. The particulates are then eliminated from the work environment rather than just moved.

Filtration Principle

Air Shower Operation

Once inside the air shower, the worker presses the unit’s start button. Once in action, the orbital nozzles jet a safe, high-velocity airstream to dislodge the embedded dust from the worker. The particles are then drawn through the screen located on the floor level and then directed to the primary filter section consisting of MERV 16 filter cartridges. The vast majority of the dust is collected in this compartment. The residual fine particulates that pass through the filter cartridges are directed to the secondary filter section, where they are intercepted by a HEPA-type filtration media. That purified air is then moved by the blower to again be jetted through the orbital nozzles.

At any time, the cleaning sequence can be stopped by pressing an emergency button. One is accessible inside the booth, and one is accessible outside of it.

Filtration Efficiency

Primary filter section
This compartment contains three 8-oz spun bond MERV 16 filter cartridges with PTFE coating. This type of filtration media has a filtration efficiency of 99.4% @ 0.08 microns. This section is also equipped with a 70-PSI pulsed air jet unclogging system that maintains the airflow within the machine.  The filter-cleaning is managed manually using a push-button on the control panel. A manometer indicating the differential pressure of the filters enables the worker to determine whether the air shower requires unclogging.

Secondary filter section
A second filtration area equipped with a HEPA-type glass microfibre media ensures the users’ health and safety. The residual fine dust is therefore collected by the secondary filter, which has a filtration efficiency of 99.97% @ 0.3 microns.
