Challenge
A custom powder torch cutting water table, designed to cut steel over 10 inches thick, generated significant amounts of smoke, rapidly filling a 40-foot bay. The torch, which operates using high-pressure air and steel shot, posed severe visibility and health hazards due to the smoke and fumes produced during operations. Traditional downdraft tables proved ineffective, and overhead hoods were impractical due to the presence of water.
Solution
To tackle this issue, we designed an innovative movable snorkel system to follow the torch head and capture pollutants directly at the source. Our double snorkel design allowed for effective and flexible source capture, which minimized the air volume requirements while maximizing filter efficiency. The system incorporated a cyclone pre-filter that also acted as a spark arrestor, adding an extra layer of safety to prevent potential fire hazards.
This solution drastically improved air quality in the workspace, ensuring that the area remained clear of lingering smoke. As a result, operator visibility was significantly enhanced, leading to improved operational efficiency and a safer working environment.
