Ply Gem is a North American manufacturer of exterior building products for residential homes. Its products are used in both new construction and remodeling projects, and it serves homeowners, builders, contractors, architects, and distributors.
Challenge
Ply Gem, a leading manufacturer of windows and doors, operates a production facility in Calgary, Alberta generating large quantities of wood and MDF dust from multiple manufacturing processes.
The accumulation of fine combustible dust inside the facility created several operational and safety concerns, including:
• Airborne dust contamination in production areas
• Employee respiratory exposure, Housekeeping and environmental issues
• Increased fire and explosion hazards associated with combustible wood dust.
An efficient centralized dust collection solution was required to maintain a clean, safe, and compliant working environment.
Solution
A centralized pulse-jet baghouse dust collection system was engineered and supplied to capture dust from multiple pick-up points throughout the facility.
The Airex baghouse dust collector includes:
• Pulse-jet cleaning system
• Top plenum configuration
• Explosion protection package and return air filtration system.
The installation of the dust collection system significantly improved air quality and housekeeping conditions within the facility while reducing combustible dust accumulation and associated safety risks. Key benefits included: Improved employee health and safety, reduction of airborne dust levels, cleaner production environment, safer operation with combustible dust protection, efficient dust capture from multiple process point and energy savings through filtered air recirculation into the facility.
