BlackPearls, a global partner in the mining sector, provides expertise, engineering, and solutions for mineral supply and processing.
Our collaboration began with the construction of an 80,000-square-foot plant located in the industrial park in Port-Cartier.
These new facilities will be used to produce grinding balls used inside rotary crushers to break down ore into fine particles and thus extract the desired material. Using different molten metals poured into molds, the balls take shape.
Challenge
The BlackPearls team called upon our expertise so that our systems could operate in two distinct areas of the production line. Indeed, the company’s facilities generate aerosols and airborne particles that reduce visibility and cleanliness in the plant and are harmful to workers’ health.
The harmful fumes are generated when metals are heated to very high temperatures in the furnace, while the airborne dust comes from the sand used during the molding and demolding process of the balls. It was therefore essential to reduce these atmospheric emissions to minimize the risks of contamination from impure metals and to improve the ambient air quality in the plant.
Solution
We proposed two 576-12TRP-6 dust collectors with access through a plenum, as this would facilitate maintenance of the filter bags both in winter and in rainy conditions. These dust collectors are powered by Chicago Blower radial direct-drive fans with an airflow of 75,000 CFM. They were thoroughly tested and balanced at the factory using a 350 HP motor.
The dust collectors are supplied by a network of rolled and welded carbon steel ducts with gauge #10 and #3/16 to extend their useful life while minimizing abrasion caused by the sand.
Ultimately, we also designed chimneys 70 feet high and 6 feet in diameter to evacuate all emissions.
The integration of the two dust collectors, combined with a network of carbon steel ducts, ensures effective reduction of harmful emissions and airborne particles, guaranteeing environmental compliance and operational safety.
